In my younger days money was for something else, now I'm playing games that used to be a luxury and in addition to having to buy the console you had to spend a fortune on games, the games of the 90s cost the same as they are now without count inflation, not only that, but now there are discounts.

So yeah, skip this entire series because you aren't getting anything out of it. Ironic, isn't it? Yakuza 0 managed to draw in newcomers while simultaneously satisfying long-time fans of the series.and here we have Shenmue 3, a game stuck so far in the past and trying so hard to appeal to die-hard fans that it ended up alienating just about everyone else in the process. By the end of the game, our hero is nowhere closer to his goal than he was at the start of the game and the blatant setup for yet another Shenmue game is practically insulting for anyone who had to wait 18 years for this game to come out. One egregious example is where the game forces you to endure a 1-hour hike in REAL TIME where our main character and some girl whose name I couldn't be bothered to remember engage in some of the most boring dialogue known to man.Īs for Shenmue 3.let me just put it like this: even if you're the kind of saint that can forgive the game for feeling like it was made 18 years ago with absolutely NO refinement to its core gameplay, the story renders the entire thing a complete waste of time. Shenmue 2 is generally seen as an improvement over its predecessor with its streamlined mechanics and much-improved pacing, but that's not saying much considering the shaky foundation of the original.

Hell, out of the 4 discs the game came on, the entirety of the first disc is just spent walking around and talking to people with almost no action whatsoever. Nope, you aren't missing anything - the controls, the combat and the pacing are indeed terrible and the game has aged like crap because of it. It's its appeal just people that played it back when it released having some rose tinted glasses, or is there genuinely something I'm missing? Does Shenmue two improve anything drastically to the point where it would be worth playing? From what I've seen of 2 and 3, it seems to be more of the same. At least its telling a relatively interesting story.Įverything else is just. That I'm willing to forgive, given when the game released. I don't care how "immersive" the game is, standing out front of a shop or whatever looking at your watch, waiting to talk to a guy who then tells you to talk to another guy who isnt available to talk to for a whole other day! It's such a drag.

But 90% of the game is just wasting your time. I can understand that they might have been cool when they first released, because maybe nothing like them had been done before. The first one is so unfun it honestly baffles me that it's as popular as it is. I got the Shenmue 1&2 collection through a humble bundle a few months ago and decided to finally give them a go.
